How To Dress Like Fashion Icons: From Finger Waves To Vintage Style Dresses
New Year's Eve is right around the corner, and you know you want to get all fancied up — you're just not sure how. Why not take a cue from some of the greatest fashion icons of all time? If you've got the retro style hot dresses, the makeup and some Aquanet (for nostalgia's sake), you've got the look.
Let's start with Audrey Hepburn. A natural beauty, Hepburn always looked great, whether she opted for glam or something more subtle.
Audrey's most famous look was from Breakfast at Tiffany's, and is definitely the way to go if you're looking for all-out elegant glamour. You'll need a black vintage style dress, either floor-length, or if you want to modernize the look a bit, something shorter and possibly flared. Pair it with black heels. This look is really all about the hair — an beehive-y updo with short bangs and an optional small tiara — and accessories — a very large and blingy but classy necklace (diamonds and pearls, preferably), matching earrings and a cigarette holder. For the makeup, go simple: black eyeliner, big eyelashes, a touch of rouge and a dash of red-pink lipstick.
Next up is Twiggy. Twiggy is more or less synonymous with the mod movement; she was always decked out in mod coast clothing and makeup. Again, this look is less about the clothes than the makeup, but make sure that the retro style dress you choose syncs up with the sort of thing Twiggy wore. Focus on the makeup: make your eyes look enormous with a very precise line of black eyeliner above your eyelashes, a line following the contour of your upper eye socket, and lots of mascara on the top lid (make sure it doesn't clump!); load the mascara onto the lower lid, but separate the lashes so they stand out from one another, and use a very fine brown eyeliner to draw on additional lashes. There's a famous photo of Twiggy in a pink vintage style formal evening dress and big mirror ball earrings — find a similar pair to complete the look.
Finally, we have Madonna. Back in the '80s and early '90s, Madonna couldn't do anything without it becoming a trend. Because of her hordes of girls ran around with heavily teased and sprayed hair, lace, fingerless evening gloves and tutus. To achieve her look, go nuts. You can literally pile on whatever you want — Madonna was more or less the Lady Gaga of her day; the conservatively-dressed thought she was off her rocker. Wear fishnet footless tights, a pair of glitzy Chuck Taylors or Doc Martens, a tutu over a corset, and, of course, fingerless gloves. Throw on as many bangles as you can find, a headband with a sparkly bow and a handful of crucifixes for good measure. As for your hair, this is when that Aquanet is going to come in handy. Curl it and tease it. Use a very bright red-pink lipstick, lots of rouge and be liberal with the dark eyeshadow.
Follow these tips and you'll be partying like a rock star! ...Or movie star! ...Or model! Either way you'll have a blast.
